Professional Philosophy Statement
Before receiving my master's in technical writing and working as a technical writer, I had a limited understanding of the field. Pursuing a career in writing—something I’ve always loved to do—seemed to offer a promising direction for my future. I was right, and the start of my career as a technical writer has exceeded my expectations, providing me with invaluable skills that have made me a better writer, communicator, and person. Technical communication involves the essential task of creating meaning, which helps people complete tasks easier, navigate technology more effectively, and move through the world with fewer unnecessary hesitations and challenges. What I admire most about technical communication is its audience-centered focus. The field is dedicated to aiding others, and I believe this aspect deserves even greater emphasis and recognition than it already receives. Throughout my education and career, I have learned how to write print and web-based installation and programming guides, compliance guides, user guides, help files, and more, for users with varying levels of technical knowledge. I have gained knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite to create both in-depth and simple illustrations. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with clients and customers to create custom documentation suited to their specific needs. Most significantly, I have learned that technical communication is more than an objective, unemotional, and neutral craft; it is directly related to humanism and greatly impacts people’s lived experiences. I value humanism and social justice within technical communication, particularly understanding our field’s power to either marginalize or empower overlooked communities. My experience in technical writing has been instrumental in helping me understand its immense influence on other people. Not only has it improved my skills as a professional writer, but it has also made me a more compassionate and empathetic person.
